At the start of class, students turned in the "Sex-Linked Traits" problems worksheet, as well as the "Activity: Face Sorting & US Census" packet for points. Amazingly, next week teachers submit one last progress report before the end-of-the-year, semester grades. Please turn in any missing assignments!
In class, we finished watching the video, "Race: The Power of an Illusion". Students finished writing 5 facts they heard in the video. We followed up the movie with an activity called a "Silent Discussion." There were 26 prompts around the classroom. Students walk around to each station and silently write their responses to the prompt.
Prompts examined intersections between Genetics and society, politics and culture. Genetic traits build us into the people we are, but how we place value on traits such as race, gender, or body size can create social inequality. It's important to examine the science, and then compare our assumptions critically against this information.
If you were absent, I encourage you to come by during Flex, lunch or Thurs/Fri after school to read through the prompts. This unit will culminate in completing portfolio entries, as well as a video project. Thinking about the topics in the silent discussion will help prepare you for these assessments, even though the discussion itself is not for a grade.
